ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- Onondaga County Executive Joanie Mahoney says she continues to study the final form of a new county budget adopted this week by county legislators.
The County Executive can only veto portions of the spending plan where spending has been increased and there are very few places that happened.
Mahoney is voicing frustration over lawmakers' decision to reduce funding to the arts. She says that funding, paid for out of hotel occupancy taxes, had been carefully negotiated.
"They could have held that money in a contingency account, like they do all the time and ask that the symphony come back. But I think there was a real effort to cut arts and cultural organizations. I don't think anybody wants to say it, but that's really what happened," said Mahoney.
Mahoney expects final decisions on the budget within a few days.
