SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- A compromise deal has been reached to end a standoff between Mayor Stephanie Miner and the Syracuse common council that has blocked the city's police department from buying new vehicles.
Councilors had held up the request complaining that too much money was being spent on unmarked cars taken home at night by investigators and other police officials. The mayor says a labor deal with police mandated many of those so-called "take home" cars. She says long discussions have laid the groundwork for slowly reducing that number.
"I think that, with many things, the longer you have to talk about it and to really get to the heart of what individuals' issues are, the more of a chance you have to solve those problems," Miner said.
The mayor appears to have the five votes necessary to pass the police car purchase plan at the council's meeting next week.
