NY Times criticizes SU’s handling of Bernie Fine investigation

NEW YORK -- Syracuse University is taking more heat for their handling of the sex abuse allegations against former associate basketball coach Bernie Fine. Friday, the
New York Times released a story criticizing the school’s actions.
Among the experts the Times interviewed was former Brooklyn Assistant District Attorney Jeffrey Mueller, who said it was "beyond egregious" that the school, and its counsel, Bond, Schoeneck and King, did not consult with law enforcement.
Onondaga County District Attorney William Fitzpatrick also criticized the school in the story, saying that nothing in the school's report indicated that anyone involved in the investigation had any expertise in investigating sexual abuse.
The university did not comment on the situation. Thursday, a letter written by Chancellor Nancy Cantor appeared in USA Today, defending the school's 2005 investigation into allegations made by former ball boy Bobby Davis. Cantor did admit there were things the school could have done differently. However, she said the school would have fired Fine on the spot had the audio recording between Davis and Fine's wife surfaced then. She said the school did not have knowledge of the tape until this week.
Two other men have come forward, saying Fine molested them as children since Bobby Davis' original accusation. Fine has denied all the allegations.
