SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- A stairway collapse sent two people to the hospital Tuesday morning in Syracuse.

Officials say two people were going down to the basement of their home on Oswego Street when the top of stairs gave way, causing the entire staircase to collapse. The pair fell approximately 10 feet.

Rescue crews used a ladder and basket to get them out of the basement. They say the victims suffered neck and back injuries, but were lucky their injuries weren't worse.

"The entire staircase slid down with them on it. Had the stairs splintered, it could have a lot more hazardous because pieces of the stairs could have been impaled into them, so they were very fortunate,” District chief Bill Elderbroom said.

Codes officials were inspecting the staircase Tuesday and planned to check similar properties in the area to make sure all are structurally sound.
