Pan Am 103 victims to be remembered Wednesday afternoon
December 21st marks an important day at Syracuse University. 23 years ago, the campus was shaken by news of the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland. 35 SU students studying abroad were on that flight, and were killed. Wednesday, the university will honor them and the other victims who died. Our Iris St. Meran has more on this annual ceremony.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The tribute will consist of prayers, a reading of the names of the 35 students, and reflections. It will begin at 2:03 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, the exact time of the bombing. On December 21st, 1988, 270 people were killed in a bombing over Lockerbie, Scotland.
In addition to the SU students, there were two students from Oswego State, a student from Colgate, and a couple from Clay. This remembrance ceremony and others held throughout the year at SU have become an integral part in paying tribute to all the victims.
Although it has been more than 20 years, the pain is still fresh.
In October, former Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi was killed. He is suspected of having ordered the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103.
The university says remembrance ceremonies like the one to be held Wednesday are to ensure no one forgets.
"The university is really taken to heart that we lost our 35 but also the 270 people. It's become a very large community for the victims' families and also for us here at SU. And the archives is trying to perpetuate the memory of those lost and take that on into the future," said Pan Am Flight 103 Collection assistant archivist Cara Howe.
The ceremony is open to the public. It will be in the Noble Room at Hendricks Chapel starting at 2:03 p.m. -- the time of the bombing. At the same time, there will be a service at the Pan Am 103 memorial at Arlington National Cemetery.
