ST. LAWRENCE COUNTY, N.Y. -- Clarkson University celebrated Martin Luther King Day on a more serious note, focusing on the severity of bullying.

A speaker from the "CAMPUSPEAK" program came to Clarkson to talk about the effects of bullying in schools. "CAMPUSPEAK" is an organization that strives to improve university communities and the lives of college students.

Brian Johnson used clips from popular movies like "Benchwarmers" and "Emperor's New Groove" to illustrate how bullying has become normalized in our society, especially in film.

"Our society has really looked at bullying as sort of a free for all and an ‘ok’ topic, but we haven't been taught how to really decode the messages that we have received from bullying. And so it looks like it's ok," said Johnson.

Johnson says his presentation will help educators create a safer school environment for students and encourage students to stand up for their classmates who are being harassed.

Students, administrators, teachers and counselors attended the event.
