JEFFERSON COUNTY, N.Y. -- Guilty of manslaughter but not murder. That's what the jury decided for Krista Goley.
Defense Attorney Matt Porter said, "Obviously we're pleased she wasn't convicted of murder. We would have liked a better verdict, but there's always the right to appeal."
Jefferson County Senior District Attorney Aaron Carr said, "I'm disappointed, but at the same time, I still feel there's a way to get justice here. The sentence in the case can range from anywhere from five to 25 years"
The 26-year-old stabbed former boyfriend Timothy Rolland in the chest following a domestic dispute at this apartment on East Lynde Street in Watertown in September of 2010.
Throughout the week of testimony from witnesses and examining evidence, Goley claimed self defense.
Carr said, "I think she used it in her favor. I think form the beginning she sort of initiated the self defense, battered woman defense, which quite frankly, there's no evidence of."
Originally, Goley only faced second degree manslaughter charges, but the charges were increased after she testified to the grand jury. Prosecutors argued the stabbing was planned and Goley was never physically abused.
But even after the conviction of the lesser charges, the victim's family says they still believe justice was served Monday afternoon.
Carr said, "I've spoken with the family and they're gratified because I think that this verdict indicates also that the jury has rejected her self-defense or justice claim."
Goley was also found guilty of seven other counts related to the stabbing. She will be sentenced for all of those in March.
