SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Senator John Defrancisco and former governor Elliot Spitzer were brought together Wednesday night. The topic of discussion was whether or not to raise taxes on the rich.

Spitzer, along with two others, argued for the raise in taxes while DeFrancisco and his constituents argued against it, citing the fact that 76 percent of the taxes imposed by New York State are paid by 13.2 of the population.

The tax issue is a focal point in the upcoming election and both sides felt the debate helped give the public a better idea of what’s at stake.

"Sometimes when the political discourse takes places in a campaign, it somehow gets spun a lot. But when you have people that are subject to questioning, like the crowd questioned us and the other side questioned us and vice-a-versa, you get a much more legitimate debate," DeFrancisco said.

Syracuse University's Maxwell School hosted the debate.
