J-D budget presented, community will need to "Save J-D Sports" again
Many Jamesville-DeWitt student-athletes can thank the generosity of the community for their sports season. The "Save J-D Sports" fundraising committee raised the $48,000 necessary to keep many of the teams afloat. As our Katie Gibas reports, now that the superintendent has presented her 2012-2013 sports budget, it looks like students will once again have to hope for the community's generosity.

ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- Jamesville-DeWitt parents were hoping for a miracle, but the superintendent didn't deliver one.
"I certainly can understand wanting to be penny wise, but I think we missed the boat on sports this year," said Scott Lance, a Jamesville-DeWitt parent.
The Superintendent presented the athletics portion of her 2012-2013 budget Monday night. The money remains the same as last year, meaning the 13 coaching and assistant positions they cut will not be reinstated. That means a reduction in the number of teams for seventh and eighth grade sports.
"I see what the actual presence of being on a modified team has done for my ninth grader, offering him self-confidence, time management, great organization. I see the benefits of being part of your scholastic team, being a student-athlete and the benefits it brings and brought to him. My seventh grader is just going through the system and I would like him to have the opportunity as well," said Joy Binder, a "Save J-D Sports" Committee Member.
This school year, the "Save J-D Sports" fundraising committee was able to get enough money to keep a majority of the coaching positions and teams afloat. Now they'll have to do the same for next school year.
"If you look at the funds that were raised for J-D sports, the community is really speaking with their dollars and what the community is saying is that we want sports for our children. Maybe it costs some money, but that's okay. Our kids deserve to have those sorts of things that we had when we were kids," said Lance.
So it will once again be up to parents and community members to raise the money necessary to Save J-D Sports.
The group will have to raise $21,000 by this May and another $48,000 before December to keep the sports running next school year.
