SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The man shot by Syracuse Police during a confrontation inside his Syracuse home back in December has been declared incompetent to stand trial.

Wednesday, two doctors who performed psychiatric evaluations on Ralph Ash, 49, found he is too mentally unstable to stand trial or even understand the charges against him.

Officials say back in December, Ash was shot three times by officers in his Catherine Street home after he allegedly grabbed a sword off his bedroom wall and began swinging around violently.

Ash will now be taken to a psychiatric facility where doctors will spend 90 days treating him and to mentally prepare him for his next court date, which is May 4th.

Ash is charged with criminal possession of a weapon and menacing.
