UTICA, N.Y. -- Two doctors took the stand in Oneida County Court Wednesday with conflicting views on Christian Patterson's mental state the night he allegedly shot and killed Sheriff's Deputy Kurt Wyman.

One, a forensic psychologist, says he believes Patterson was depressed in the weeks leading up to the incident. He also says Patterson's lack of response to police during negotiations at his Town of Augusta home wasn't necessarily a sign of hostility toward officers.

"He's not a really responsive guy. He doesn't talk much, he doesn't articulate. He doesn't engage readily. He didn't with me across interviews," said Dr. Norman Lesswing, a forensic psychologist.

The second doctor, a psychiatrist, said he didn't believe Patterson suffered from depression at the time of the standoff. He also testified that Patterson shows a pattern of not taking responsibility for his actions.

Closing arguments are slated for Thursday morning.
