Occupy Wall Street visits Syracuse

By: Katie Gibas

It was a boost in morale for Occupy Syracuse protesters as organizers from Occupy Wall Street made a stop in the Salt City Wednesday. It's part of their Northeast traveling Occupy movement. As our Katie Gibas reports, even though many of the encampments have been shut down, Occupy is still as strong as ever.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- It's been weeks since Occupy Syracuse protesters were evicted from Perseverance Park. But they're still in motion.

"Morale went down a little bit, but mostly because it's cold. But now that Occupy Supply has supplied us with arctic gear, everybody's a little bit warmer and happier, so it's actually been pretty good," said Melanie DiGiglio, an Occupy Syracuse organizer.

Also reinvigorating the movement was a visit by Occupy Wall Street protesters. They marched together from Perseverance Park to Columbus Circle and even made a stop inside City Hall.

"We wanted to go around the Northeast, which is just a doable distance for a road trip, to talk to other people, exchange ideas and experiences and skills and really try to build more of a network and more solidarity between all these occupations," said Jen Waller, an Occupy Wall Street protester.

Even though the eviction of encampments was a disappointment, occupiers say it's definitely not the end of their movement.

"It's just the next phase. We just move onto the next phase, which is not necessarily camping, but occupying public space to teach people. Our current major fight is, of course, against corporate personhood. And we're trying to get that to where the common council here in Syracuse passes a resolution against it. We're also looking for the county to do one and then look toward the state," said DiGiglio.

Waller added, "It's given people the ability to step back and really think about tactically, strategically to really change things."

Occupiers say they plan spread the movement throughout the city and beyond, with some tips learned from Occupy Wall Street.

Occupy Wall Street will be making their next stop in Ithaca Thursday.
