ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- A new federal study shows that only 40 percent of uninsured women will get an annual mammogram. That's why the Onondaga County Cancer Services program is offering some incentives for women to get screened this month.
According to the American Cancer Society, one in every eight women will be affected by breast cancer in their lifetime. This month, uninsured women in Onondaga County between 40 and 64 years old are encouraged to get a free breast cancer screening at a referred provider. The program also offers free tests for women in the same age group to get a free cervical cancer screening.
This is one of about four annual programs that serve as a reminder to put your health first.
"Really reminding women to think about themselves and get their annual mammogram through the Cancer Services Program and especially like we said uninsured women, it does get the word out. That's why it's so important, we're so proud of our community in getting programs like this running," said Jenny Dickinson, Onondaga Co. Cancer Services coordinator.
Women and men between 50 and 64 years old can also get colorectal screenings if they don't have insurance.
You can find useful information about the Cancer Services Program on their new Facebook page. Uninsured men and women in Onondaga County can sign up for a screening by calling (315) 435-3653. If you live outside of Onondaga County, you can call the same number to learn more about where you can get screened.
