UNITED STATES -- Roses, hearts and hand-holding -- it's hard for anyone to miss, but Valentine's Day can be a rough day if you're recently single or divorced.

"Certainly Valentine's Day, like any holiday really, can be pretty hard on folks who have just gotten out of a relationship,” said Matt Johnson, PhD, BU Professor of Psychology. “All holidays are different, but Valentine’s Day for some people can be especially difficult."

Eli I. Kassis, MA, LMHC, Therapist agreed, "There is a small percentage of the population it has negative effect on. Depression and suicide rates increase around holidays."

But experts say it's important to remember that not all breakups are bad.

"If they just got out of a very bad, abusive relationship they could celebrate that instead,” said Johnson.

If you're single on Valentine's Day, therapists say don't feel guilty about pampering yourself, but you could also give back to the community.

"If single people know other single people, get together with others, treat yourself, indulge, go for a massage,” said Kassis. “Indulging in yourself in a way that will keep you happy.”

Johnson added, "I think a lot of people find they have a lot of emptiness where they used to do a lot for the other person, they could find some ways to give back – volunteering and giving back to folks."

Kassis agreed, saying, "You're certainly not thinking about yourself and focusing on others. You feel good helping other people."

Valentine's Day can be an exciting or painful day, but therapists say it’s good to remember it's just one day.
