UNITED STATES -- A survey conducted by the National Retail Federation shows that spending in 2012 is expected to exceed last year by 8.5 percent. In total, Americans are expected to spend about $17.6 billion on this Valentine's Day.

About 19 percent of all people celebrating today will buy jewelry. 35.5 percent of those celebrating will take someone one out for the evening. 36 percent of those celebrating Valentine's Day will buy flowers, and more than 50 percent will buy candy.

Edible Arrangements in Syracuse has been a very busy place for people not looking for those traditional gifts. Store officials have added staff and say they've been working extra hours to get fruit arrangement orders ready. They say items like berry chocolate roses have been extremely popular because they're like flowers and a sweet treat in one.

"You're really struggling to find the perfect thing for that person to really express how you feel about that someone and that's sometimes hard to do with objects. So, the concept of what we have here all of a sudden that's a great idea so they go ahead and try to get the right thing for the right person," said Teara Brodeur, Edible Arrangements store associate.

Store officials say today is no doubt one of the busiest days of the year as are many candy stores and flower shops across the country.

If you haven't yet gotten a gift for your Valentine, you still have time, but expect longer lines and more waiting time. About 20 percent of people surveyed say they planned to shop online.
