SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Police are investigating a shooting in Syracuse that sent two people to the hospital. It happened on Furman Street around 2 p.m. Wednesday.

According to investigators, a car pulled into a driveway on the street when an SUV pulled in behind and opened fire.

Two people in the car were hit. Both vehicles then sped off.

Shortly after, police said the car ran a red light at Castle and Salina Streets and was hit by another vehicle. It hit a utility pole and kept moving as the driver tried to run away.
Bystanders were able to stop the car and keep the driver from fleeing.

The two victims were taken to Upstate University Hospital, where one is in critical condition.

Police said they don't believe this was a random crime, and they're hoping to get help from the community with their investigation.

Tom Connellan, Syracuse Police Sergeant said, “The public should be concerned that people are running around shooting shots in the middle of the day and we need the public's help to try to find out who was responsible from that. Do I feel the public's in any danger of this happening again from these same people? I highly doubt it because we believe this car was targeted for whatever reason."

Syracuse police are asking anyone with information on the shooting to call investigators at (315) 442-5222.
