CANTON, N.Y. -- Robert Webb, also known as "Chase" has been a large part of the defense's case in proving Wayne Oxley's innocence. In previous testimony, multiple defense witnesses claim Webb had admitted to killing Bernard Trickey Jr. after being cheated in a drug deal. Trickey was killed in his home in 2005 after authorities say he was beaten to death with a baseball bat.
On Wednesday, Webb took the stand for the prosecution and denied all allegations against him. Webb said he never threatened to kill Trickey nor admitted to killing him. He also denied being involved in any of the victim's drug dealings.
According to Webb, he had met with his probation officer in Brooklyn the day before the murder and spent the night at his grandmother's home. Webb's probation officer at the time, also took the stand and verified that Webb had met with her on August 29th, the day before the murder. However, there aren't any witnesses able to verify his account of his whereabouts after his meeting with his probation officer.
At one point, Webb said he had been afraid he was going to be charged with Trickey's murder. When asked why, he said people told him they saw him on the news in relation with the murder.
The defense also rested its case Wednesday after not calling any witnesses to the stand. Oxley had considered taking the stand again, but after talking to his attorney decided not to. Closing arguments will be held Thursday morning and then it's time for the jury to deliberate.
