TUSCARORA, N.Y. -- Firefighters were able to extinguish the flames but not before roughly five acres were burned off Route 417 in Tuscarora Monday afternoon.
The fire started after a tree branch brought down some power lines, sparking the flames along the hillside. Authorities say the dry conditions and heavy winds helped the fire spread rapidly up the hill.
Dozens of firefighters, some from as far away as Pennsylvania, were brought in, many riding ATVs to get closer to the flames. And while the fire may be out, there is still a risk it could re-ignite.
"It's possible. We dug a fire line all the way around it, which is a line around to control the fire that is down to the dirt so that it won’t spread across that line. And then we have put out trees and stuff that are going to be close to the line. And then someone will come back and check on it tomorrow," said New York Forest Ranger, Ann Farrand.
Route 417 was closed for most of the afternoon while crews worked to put out the fire.
