ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- Onondaga County took the time to honor some workers who play a key role in public safety, but often go unrecognized. They are the personnel staffing at the county's 911 Center.

More than a dozen of those workers were honored for their efforts over the past year. Those efforts involve, literally, hundreds of thousands of emergency calls from the public.

“Approximately 580,000 911 calls for assistance per year. And we dispatch another 490,000 incidents to over 100 public safety agencies. So, we do a lot of work in connecting the citizens who call for assistance and the 100 plus public safety agencies here in Onondaga County that serve them,” said William Blyle, Onondaga County Emergency Communications Commissioner.

The awards coincide with National Public Safety Telecommunicator Week, honoring all those staffing emergency call centers across the country.
