CHEMUNG COUNTY, N.Y. -- It's been two days since the plan to spend $3.5 million on a new community center in Southport was voted down.

The plan to rebuild the 13,000 square foot community center at Chapel Park was rejected by just more than 100 votes.

Now residents are questioning what the money will be used for instead. The funding was already put aside.

One board member suggests they upgrade the community center but use the money more moderately.

"I have no problem with an expansion or even a brand new community center to replace the existing one. Let's bring it down to a reasonable amount though," said Southport Town Board Member Etta Kay Dewey.

“I can't speak for the board. We have to wait for the dust to settle down and the board to decide what direction we're going in," said Southport Town Supervisor David Sheen.

The board had planned a special meeting for next Tuesday. Since the referendum didn't pass, that meeting has been canceled.
