FORT DRUM, N.Y. -- A report released Monday shows that Fort Drum's economic impact on the North Country area was more than $1.6 billion during the 2011 fiscal year.
That money was leveraged in support of the more than 19,000 soldiers and more than 26,000 family members who live in the tri-county area.
Since 1988, this Army installation has brought more than $16.9 billion into the local economy.
Fort Drum is the largest employer in the North Country, with payrolls totaling over $1 billion for soldiers and more than $200 million for civilian workers.
The military post has also allowed several local school districts to receive more than $21 million in federal impact aid.
