A popular Broome County event won't be taking place this year. The Binghamton Air Show is being cancelled for the third consecutive year. Our Melissa Kakareka spoke with airport officials to find out why it's cancelled and when the show might return.

BROOME COUNTY, N.Y. -- Air show fans will have to wait a little bit longer to see the Greater Binghamton Air Show take flight.

"We have decided again this year not to hold the Binghamton Air Show," said Deputy Commissioner of Aviation David Hickling.

Airport officials say they have decided not to hold the event this year due to ongoing construction at the airport as well as budgetary constraints. The same reasons the show was cancelled the past two years.

"With the local economy, the cost of the air show is going up. It just isn't the right time to go to our sponsors and ask for more money to do the air show and it's not really a good time to raise our ticket prices to our patrons," said Hickling.

But the cancelation doesn't mean that air show fans should be worried. Organizers say they put in an application for big name performers such as the Blue Angels and the Thunderbirds every year and hope to bring those acts and the air show back in the near future.

"If we were to get them back, we probably would be able to put on another show because that brings in enough revenue, enough sponsorship. We definitely intend to bring the air show back, we think it's important to the community. When the time is right, we will bring it back," said Hickling.

Airport officials say the closest places for air show fans to see big name performers this year are the Jones Beach Air Show and the Lakehurst New Jersey Air Show.
