TOMPKINS COUNTY, N.Y. -- The weekend came to a violent end on this quiet street in the Town of Lansing.

"The defendant got in his truck and engaged in an altercation with Mr. West that led to Mr. West sustaining multiple stab wounds," said Tompkins County District Attorney Gwen Wilkinson.

Dana Houghtling, 40, has been charged with assault after deputies say he stabbed Jeff West, 31, repeatedly with knives. Both men are from Groton.

Investigators say this wasn't the first time Houghtling and the victim had met and that the deadly altercation stemmed from a domestic violence incident last month.

"On March 25th, Dana Houghtling, the defendant in this matter, was charged in connection with a domestic violence incident," Wilkinson said. "A stay away order of protection was issued on behalf of a woman, alleged victim."

Wilkinson said West and the woman went to Houghtling's house before the stabbing.

"The defendant text messaged this woman and asked her or sent her a message that caused her to take a friend and go to the defendant's home. When they arrived at the home, there was an altercation between the defendant and her friend."

West and the woman left, but the argument wasn't over.

"The defendant, Mr. Houghtling, drove his truck to a house on Van Ostrand Road and crashed his truck into a car that was parked in a driveway there," Wilkinson said. "At that time, the woman and Mr. West were outside."

After he assaulted West, investigators say Houghtling fled. He later turned himself in to the sheriff's office.

West was rushed to Upstate University hospital, but died of his injuries Monday, leaving authorities to seek further charges for what is now a homicide.

The Tompkins County Sheriff's Office is investigating the homicide, along with State Police. The case is expected to go before a grand jury on Thursday.

An attorney for Houghtling could not be reached for comment.
