CORNING, N.Y. -- Wednesday was the first step in the creation of a brand new hospital in Corning as Guthrie officials broke ground on the new facility.

Lieutenant Governor Robert Duffy was on hand as the first dirt was overturned, marking the start of construction on the 67 acre, $147 million hospital. The building will be in the Town of Corning just off exit 48 on I-86 and feature 65 private rooms and state of that art medical equipment.

Officials are excited about the benefit the hospital will bring to the community.

Dr. Russel Woglom, an Interim Medical Director of Corning Hospital said, “It's going to certainly allow us to attract better and more staff but I think it is really going to provide a phenomenal environment to provide care for our community."

Robert Duffy, New York State Lieutenant Governor said, “It's going to create jobs in the construction and certainly jobs when it opens up but most importantly it is going to provide outstanding world-class care to the patients that come through those doors when it opens in two years."

Construction will begin shortly and plans are for the hospital to be open in the summer of 2014.
