SOLVAY, N.Y. -- A new scholarship at Solvay High School will reward young people interested in "green" jobs.

Representatives with the village of Solvay Electric Department presented school leaders with a $50,000 check Thursday.

As part of the process of adding green power to their supply, the superintendent says the scholarship was required by the state. Five-thousand dollars a year will be awarded to one student for each of the next ten years.

"I think it's very important for the community and the students to understand the less dependent we are on foreign oil, the better off everybody is," Solvay Electric Superintendent John Montone said.

"We are continuing to obviously encourage our students to continue their college education to pursue areas of math and science. We're very excited to have this as an incentive for our students to look at those particular career paths," Solvay High School Principal Jay Tinklepaugh said.

The first green jobs scholarship will be awarded to a Solvay High School student at an awards ceremony next month.
