SCHUYLER COUNTY, N.Y. -- Neighbors on a rural road in the Town of Dix were startled by an ominous sound Thursday night.
"We received several calls of a gunshot in the area. The victim's father actually reported the incident," said Schuyler County Sheriff Bill Yessman.
Authorities responded to a home on Pearl Street near Catlin Hill Road. That's where they found Daniel Bennett, 31, dead of a gunshot wound.
The Sheriff said Bennett's father, who also lives in the home, had been sleeping when he was awakened by the gunshot and found his son dead.
Investigators say they are following several leads and looking for help from neighbors to track down a suspicious vehicle reported in the area.
"If anyone saw a loud vehicle in the area between 10:30 and 11 last night. We have reports of a loud vehicle being in the area. We're not sure if it's connected with this incident, but if anyone has any information, please call it in," Yessman said.
While they're not releasing many details yet, authorities say the community is safe.
"We don't feel that this was a random act at this time, but it shouldn't be that people are in fear in the area," Yessman said.
Meanwhile, the Schuyler County Sheriff's Department, along with the New York State Police, are continuing the investigation.
Investigators are asking anyone with any information about the incident to call their anonymous tip line at (607) 535-8224.
