SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Earth Day may officially be Sunday, but schools across Central New York took time Friday to help clean up their communities.

Students at Our Lady of Pompei in Syracuse headed out to nearby streets to pick up trash. Teachers say they were inspired by SUNY ESF students.

The ESF Honors Society has been tutoring and mentoring students at the school, encouraging them to get involved in their community.

The cleanup is just another step that groups on the Northside are taking to fix up the area.

"Our school and our church have really become a center for revitalization on the Northside, along with St. Joe's and Northside Up, and we're really changing the face of the neighborhood," said Our Lady of Pompei Development Director Patricia Schmidt.

The students helped to clean up Division, Ash, North McBride and North Townsend streets.
