BROOME COUNTY, N.Y. -- Broome County took a moment to remember those who have been victims of violent crime in the community. Local officials joined representatives from the Crime Victims Assistance Center at the Oakdale Mall Monday to declare this week as Crime Victims Rights Week.

The announcement was made in front of an exhibit dedicated to 97 local homicide victims. Officials said the memorial serves as a reminder that everyone should do their part to help prevent violence.

"It’s just a constant reminder that it happens here and until it stops happening we need to fight and work to eradicate it to the best of our ability and provide services to people who are victimized innocently. They don't ask for this, but their families are left reeling and trying to cope and it’s very, very difficult," said Raini Baudendistal, Crime Victims Assistance Center Executive Director.

Officials also plan to hold a survivors vigil at Cheri Lindsey Park in Binghamton on Tuesday night.
