Thousands without power in the Southern Tier

CHEMUNG COUNTY, N.Y. -- Thousands of people in the Southern Tier remain without power. Heavy snow and wind knocked down power lines, leaving more than 10,000 people without power in the Southern Tier.

At its height, more than 8,000 people were without power in Chemung County alone. Most of the outages are in Elmira and Southport.

NYSEG crews are out assessing and repairing the damage. They said it will take hours before power is fully restored throughout the county.

"We're just waiting now for the power to come on because it's been off almost 10 hours. So hopefully we can get it back on," said Maurice Green, an Elmira resident.

The City of Elmira is urging people to call NYSEG if you've lost power and to treat blacked out traffic signals as all-way stop signs.
