People living in the Syracuse area are reminded they can do more to help keep their neighborhoods safe. Law enforcement officials say there are about 90 Neighborhood Watch groups in the city, and tonight there's an opportunity for those groups to meet and share information. SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Later tonight, the Neighborhood Watch groups of Syracuse will host a dinner meeting at Lincoln Middle School to highlight community awareness. The Neighborhood Watch program is built on the premise that concerned residents become the eyes and ears of their community.

Members of the Syracuse Police Department will make presentations which will include highlighting potential warning signs of criminal activity. Officials say watch group members should look for things to help identify illegal activity and find out the best way to report it.

People are encouraged to get more involved with their local groups and report more suspicious activity if they see it.

"I think the bigger hurdle is, if somebody sees illegal activity is to in fact call the police department, is the bigger problem. We need to have people pass on information so that the police department is aware of problems in the individual neighborhoods and so that they can do their job better," said Jim Crosby, Syracuse Neighborhood Watch coordinator.

All active Neighborhood Watch members or anyone in Syracuse wishing to become more involved is encouraged to attend tonight’s meeting. It will take place at 6 p.m. at Lincoln Middle School at 1613 James Street.
