ITHACA, N.Y. -- Trouble with equipment has caused at least 20 flights to be diverted or canceled at the Ithaca-Tompkins Regional Airport since Friday.

The trouble is with frequency crystals in the vertical navigational system that helps guide planes in for landing when visibility is poor.

Without the system, pilots must be able to see the runway from 1,000 feet rather than 250 feet.

But officials say thanks to Senator Charles Schumer, repairs are underway. Schumer urged the FAA to act quickly, after repairs were slated to take up to six weeks. That's how long it takes the manufacturer to grow new crystals, but officials found some in Newark that are no longer in use.

Testing should be completed by the end of the week. Until then, passengers will have to hope for clear weather.

The airport manager hopes to upgrade the 1950s technology next year, but he estimates it will cost more than a million dollars.
