HERKIMER COUNTY, N.Y. -- It's a plan to turn the area's natural beauty into economic growth this summer. Trout Power announced its first West Canada Creek trout fishing tournament for the weekend of June 8th.

The tournament will be held on a 20 mile stretch along the creek.

Several local businesses and legislators are getting behind the tournament and its goals.

The group says they hope to bolster growth by capitalizing on New York's multi-billion dollar fishing and tourism industries.

“They'll drive through these little towns and see bakeries and flower shops and brick sidewalks and flowers and also see a beautiful trout stream that they know contains wild trout that are self sustaining,” Jordan Ross said.

The weekend's scheduled events include a 5K, a rubber ducky race for kids and a thousand dollar cash prize for most inches of trout caught.
