WATERTOWN, N.Y. -- High school students from across the North Country competed in the 19th Annual Envirothon Wednesday. This hands-on competition tests students' skills and knowledge in areas of soils, aquatics, forestry, wildlife, and current environmental issues.

These teams of five closely examined specimens at the Thompson Park Zoo, and completed several tests. Instructors said this friendly competition is a great way to get students more familiar with the environment that they live in.

"I think it's definitely a challenging competition for them, and really challenges them to learn a little bit about wildlife, aquatics, and really apply their knowledge of science,” said Jennifer Phelps, Carthage Central School Agriculture teacher.

The Jefferson County Solid and Water Conservation district runs the competition each year.
