BROOME COUNTY, N.Y. -- Road work has put a highly traveled thoroughfare out of commission for the next two years.

Construction began on the Route 17 Eastbound bridge over Route 81 in Kirkwood early this month. The $4.2 million project is expected to be completed in the spring of 2014.

Crews are expected to remove the steel beams from the bridge within the next week.

The roadwork is just a few miles south-east of construction underway to upgrade the section of Route 17 known as Kamikaze Curve and officials remind drivers to remain cautious through those areas.

"Slow down within the work zone, put down the hand-held devices and be aware or their surroundings. Be patient in the work zone and understand that the work zone is not here to inconvenience you, it's here to make your commute a lot safer and a lot better when the work is finally completed," said DOT Spokesman Dave Hamburg.

Police are also reminding drivers to change lanes when approaching vehicles with flashing lights in construction zones.
