ELMIRA, N.Y. -- "I got woken up by banging on the door. I didn't answer it because it's two in the morning. So I was sitting there, couldn't fall back to sleep and then I heard the gunshots."
This woman lives on Hathorn Court, one door down from a double shooting that sent a 22-year-old woman and 26-year-old man to the hospital. They're being treated at Arnot Ogden Medical Center for non-life-threatening injuries. This neighbor did not want us to reveal her name or show her face.
"I look out the window and that's when I see all the ambulances and I see them pulling her out on a stretcher."
"Police say two male suspects forced their way into this apartment, shot the two victims and then fled the scene."
No arrests have been made. Police are still following up on leads but say there's no reason for Hathorn Court residents to be concerned.
"I don't feel that it was just a random act. These people may have been targeted as such," said Elmira Police Sgt. Tim Dacey.
Neighbors who know the victims personally say the woman is pregnant and has three children. They can't understand why anyone would do this.
"Her children were in the house and they were good people and I can't believe something like that happened."
"Very shocked and surprised and nervous and scared because it's so close. And in such a community like this, it's just close," said Nakita Kachuroi of Elmira.
A little too close for comfort for such a serious act of violence.
