ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- The last Friday in April marks Arbor Day and students at a local elementary school got to take part in their town's celebration this year.

Students at Fayetteville Elementary School held an assembly Friday with Town of Manlius officials. The kids learned about trees and watched video of three trees being planted at their school earlier this month with the help of student council representatives.

Educators say Arbor Day provides the opportunity to teach students social responsibility.

"We want our kids to accept ownership for their world and all that happens in their world and the environment is a huge piece of their world," said Principal Nancy Smith.

The Town of Manlius chooses a different school each year to host its Arbor Day celebration.
