MASSENA, N.Y. -- Prom season is upon us and one North Country organization is doing its part to ensure every girl who needs a dress has one.
Melissa's Closet in Massena is giving out new and gently used dresses. The program, now in its fourth year, has given out thousands of dresses to those who might not otherwise be able to afford one. It is named after Melissa Walsh, a young woman who died in a car crash in 2007. Her family started Melissa's Closet in her memory.
This year, they've purchased about 250 new dresses, as well as collected donations and they are giving them away for free.
"In these economic times, we feel that there are many girls in need of dresses for very different reasons, so we like to say come in, no questions asked, pick out your dress, pick out your accessories and leave. And girls are just extremely appreciative to have that opportunity," said Megan Walsh, organizer of Melissa’s Closet.
Melissa's Closet will be open Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. It's located on Main Street in Massena and is available for girls from Jefferson, St. Lawrence, Clinton, Franklin and Essex counties.
