ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- Walkers gathered at Onondaga Community College this weekend to shed light on an issue many are reluctant to talk about. Saturday's "Out of the Darkness" walk raised awareness of suicide prevention efforts in the community.

Organizers hope to reduce the stigmas associated with mental illness and suicide and encourage those suffering from depression to seek help. They also want to bring hope to those affected by suicide.

"So that our loved ones who have died by suicide are defined by the life they lived, not by the last few seconds and how they died," said Debra Graham, American Foundation for Suicide Prevention Central New York Area Director.

For more information on suicide prevention efforts and recognizing warning signs, you can visit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention website at afsp.org.
