SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Close to two dozen kids hit the streets of Syracuse Saturday, determined to make a difference.

The "Pick-Up Pack" included Girl Scouts and members of the youth advisory council at the Westside Family Resource Center.

The students organized their own community cleanup day and even designed their own t-shirts for the occasion.

Talking with leaders from the center, they say the project provided a great lesson in community leadership.

"It's given them a sense of responsibility, taking care of their own community. Being able to collaborate with other groups and learning that it's not just about them. They can bring other people in the bowl to support what they're doing," said Mary Alice Smothers, Westside Family Resource Center Coordinator.

Along with cleaning up trash on Marcellus Street and at Skiddy Park, the kids also did a landscaping project back at the Resource Center.
