ONONDAGA COUNTY, N.Y. -- A local family is leading the fight against ovarian cancer after losing a loved one to the disease.
Friends, family and community members came together in Cicero for a zumbathon Sunday. This was the second year they've held the event.
Last year, Christine Shoeck-Blakely was in attendance, but after she passed away in August, family members decided to keep the tradition alive in her honor.
Blakely's niece, who is a zumba instructor, was the one who came up with the idea. She says it's a fitting way to pay tribute.
"The reason I love to teach zumba so much is because zumba is a family, zumba people are a family. And when something like this goes down, they're here to show their support. So it's a good thing," Jessica Ouimet said.
As part of the fundraiser, friends also had a motorsports racecar designed in Chris' honor. There were also raffles and giveaways that helped to raise money.
