SOUTHERN TIER -- A new study reveals startling numbers about hunger in the Southern Tier. It's called "Map the Meal Gap" and was released by the Food Bank of the Southern Tier and Feeding America.

The study found that 71,000 are struggling with food insecurity across Broome, Chemung, Schuyler, Steuben, Tioga and Tompkins counties. That's 12.7 percent of that six county population.

The study also takes a look at the people in need to determine their income eligibility for federal nutrition assistance and meal cost estimates for every county in the nation.

The hope is that this data can then be used to redefine the way service providers and lawmakers address areas of need.
