BROOME COUNTY, N.Y. -- This week, the Southern Tier is honoring police officers who have died in the line of duty. Local leaders were joined by several law enforcement agencies for a special ceremony at Binghamton University Monday.
The memorial service featured selections from the Edward P. Maloney Memorial Pipe Band and the raising of the police memorial flag. Representatives from each law enforcement agency also placed roses in front a memorial bearing the names of fallen officers.
Those who took part in the ceremony said it's important to remember everything that police officers and their families sacrifice to keep the public safe.
"A lot of people don't see beyond the uniform, they think we are just people out writing tickets or something like that, we are family members, we are parents, daughters, brothers and sons, we are people's grandparents even," said Lt. Madeline Bay, NYS University Police.
Police Week continues on Tuesday with a memorial breakfast at the Owego Treadway.
