ST. LAWRENCE COUNTY, N.Y. -- Construction has started on the infamous ‘S’ curve on Route 56 in South Colton. The $4.5 million project will create a new two mile section of road.

In the past, the road has experienced significant flooding and traffic flow issues. A temporary fix was put in, in 2005, but the department of transportation said it is time to do a complete project.

Over the next few weeks, construction crews will be clearing the area of trees and getting ready for excavation. The DOT said the project will bring significant changes to the landscape.

Michael Flick, DOT Public Information Officer said, “When we’re done we’ll have it, not a modern highway, but it’ll meet modern standards and should hopefully carry on for another 80 years like the old one did.”

Construction should be completed by next year.
