TOMPKINS COUNTY, N.Y. -- Witnesses recount a brutal attack that left one Tompkins County man dead and another in jail.

Dana Houghtling, 40, of Groton was arraigned this week on a 12-count indictment, including a murder charge, for the April 15th stabbing of Jeff West, 31.

According to court papers, witnesses said Houghtling and his wife were estranged after a violent domestic dispute left her hospitalized.

Witnesses said on the day of the murder, the wife and West, her new boyfriend, went to Houghtling's house to check on a child. That's where the two first came to blows. The couple went to a family member's home in Lansing and according to court papers, Houghtling followed them, racing down the street and hitting a parked car in the driveway so hard that the car flipped onto the porch.

Witnesses said Houghtling attacked West with two large knives, stabbing him repeatedly, even smashing a window and continuing the assault after West jumped into a car to escape. West died from his injuries the next day.

In addition to murder, Houghtling faces charges of criminal contempt, criminal possession of a weapon and endangering the welfare of a child. He remains behind bars on $500,000 bail.
