STEUBEN COUNTY, N.Y. -- The Corning-Painted Post facilities plan continues to move forward, while a lawsuit seeking to put a halt to the plan is headed to appellate court.

The superintendent says the district will begin putting out bids out for the $97 million project next week. The work will be split up so separate bids will go out for different parts of the project. They're starting with the parking lot construction, asbestos removal and a new bus loop at Corning East High this July.

"It's a large project. I think there is a lot of risk on the part of contractors taking on that much work two years out, not really knowing what market factors could be," said C-PP superintendent Mike Ginalski.

Corning resident Thomas O'Brien fought to have the plan overturned last year, but the State Education Commissioner upheld the public vote in favor of the project. He has since filed an appeal with the State Supreme Court.

The case goes to court May 18th.

All of this comes as the district says it will cut 106 staff positions for the coming school year.
