FORT DRUM, N.Y. -- Nearly 40 Central and Northern New York veterans were honored by the state Thursday afternoon. All were nominated for the State Senate Veteran's Hall of Fame.

Thirty-nine veterans of wars from Oswego, Jefferson and St. Lawrence counties were honored for their service and continuing work and involvement in their communities.

Each nominee was presented with a plaque and certificate from State Senator Patty Ritchie at the Fort Drum USO. The Senator also announced that retired U.S. Army Colonel Mike Plummer, who founded the "adopt-a-platoon" program, will be inducted into the Hall of Fame for 2012.

"It's an honor to be recognized among so many distinguished veterans. To read their bios, it's everything from the Battle of the Bulge, to the Beach all the through Iraq and Afghanistan," Plummer said.

"One gentleman who came up, he actually is an ex POW. He said how much he appreciated it and how much it meant. It really is hard to control your emotions when they're thanking you for something when they were a POW," said Ritchie.

That prisoner of war Ritchie is talking about is none other than Rick White, who is the father of our very own photographer, RD White.
