WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. -- For a few months, NextEra Energy Resources has been pushing to invest $200 million in a wind farm that would span four towns in Schuyler and Chemung Ccounties. And their biggest landowner has officially signed on.

Watkins Glen International announced Thursday it would partner with NextEra Energy as a landowner in the proposed wind farm. WGI officials say the wind farm is in line with their green initiatives.

The farm would consist of 50 to 75 wind turbines in the towns of Catlin, Dix, Hector and Catharine. NextEra is the largest wind and solar developer of energy in North America, but officials say they've never built a wind farm on a piece of land that has a sports complex like the Glen.

"We have not built a wind farm in a location like this before and we are really excited about the potential of doing something like that. We think it would be great both for our business as well as for Mike's and it would be a really exciting aspect of this community,"said NextEra Energy Resources development director Ross Groffman.

Construction could begin as early as 2014 and would take six to nine months.
