SKANEATELES, N.Y. -- A well-known Skaneateles family is safe after their home caught fire Thursday night. Crews responded to the home of Carl Byrne, president of Byrne Dairy, on East Lake Road just before 9 p.m.
Investigators believe the fire started on the second floor and quickly spread to the attic. But with help from nearly two dozen departments, crews were able to put out the fire in 15 minutes.
"When the trucks arrived from both directions from our company on Coon Hill and out of our main station the fire was already through the roof, so it could be seen from the other side of the lake as firemen were responding," said Skaneateles Fire Chief Jim Buff.
The family will not be able to return to the home for a while because of significant water damage. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
