CHEMUNG COUNTY, N.Y. -- For the 7th year in a row, hundreds of people gathered in Eldridge Park in Elmira Saturday to do their part to raise awareness about suicide in Chemung County.
About 1,500 people took part in this year's 'Walk a Mile in My Shoes Suicide Prevention Walk. The event is designed to help raise money to support a number of local suicide prevention initiatives. And organizers believe the annual success of the walk shows that the message is getting through to the community.
Brian Hart, of the Chemung County Department of Mental Hygiene said, “Even some of your larger cities are only seeing two or three hundred people so as a community of 90,000, to get 1,500 people out, and they're not all just from Elmira proper or Chemung even, we're getting them from multiple counties and multiple states at this point."
