SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- A man has died in Syracuse after he was hit by a delivery truck while trying to cross the road. It happened just before 7:30 p.m. Monday on Erie Boulevard East near the Smith Street intersection.
Police say the 62-year-old was not at a crosswalk when they believe he tried to cross the Boulevard and was hit by a UPS truck.
The man, whose name is not being released, was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Police say the driver didn't see the man walk out into the road.
"He said he was driving down Erie Boulevard and when he looked up, all of a sudden this pedestrian was in his way. It happened right at dusk, which is really a tough time. It was raining, bad conditions. You know, with dusk, your eyes are adjusting to the change in light, so it's a difficult time," said Syracuse Police Sergeant Tom Connellan.
Police shut down a section of Erie Boulevard eastbound for close to two hours while crews reconstructed the crash.
